2021 Olympics: live updates, news, medal count, schedule as Sydney McLaughlin dazzles, US women’s hoops roll

The US women’s basketball team faces Australia in the quarter-finals, the US baseball team try to maintain their hopes for a gold medal and an electric final in the women’s 400-meter hurdles on bridge as a Another night (and morning) of action takes place in Tokyo. Here is an overview of the main events centered on the United States.

Athletics

What: 400m hurdles women, 3000m steeplechase women, hammer throw men, 800m men, finals 200m men; more decathlon, heptathlon and more heats

When: Tuesday, 8 pm-11:30pm; Wednesday, 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Television: NBC, US and streaming

The women’s 400-meter hurdles final falls into NBC’s prime-time window, with American Sydney McLaughlin as the overwhelming favorite, but all of Tuesday night’s action will also be in the United States. The other finals listed – including the men’s 200-meter final which features three Americans – are in the Wednesday morning session, which is broadcast only to watch live.

Women’s basketball

What: US vs. Australia

When: Wednesday, 12:40 a.m.

TV: United States and streaming

As the knockout phase begins, American women have yet to lose, but neither have they lived up to their usual surprisingly dominant standards. From 1992 to 2016, the Americans went 33-0 in Olympic groups with an average margin of victory of over 35 points per game. Baseball

What: United States vs. Dominican Republic

When: Tuesday, 11 p.m.

TV: CNBC (delayed, Wednesday, 12:15 a.m.) and streaming

A win here would put the United States in the semifinals of this unorthodox tournament while a second straight loss would end their gold medal hopes and send them to the bronze medal game. ICYMI, Joe Vardon wrote of their previous game, a loss to Japan.

Golf

What: Women’s first round

When: Tuesday, 6.30 p.m.

TV: Golf Channel and streaming

Nelly Korda (7:14 p.m.), Lexi Thompson (7:25 p.m.), Jessica Korda (9:03 p.m.) and Danielle Kang (9:36 p.m.) are the American hopefuls who try to follow in the footsteps of Xander Sc Chaudele’s gold medal as everyone takes the start on Tuesday Eastern prime time evening.

Skateboarding

What: Preliminaries and final of the women’s park

When: Tuesday, 8 p.m. (final at 11:30 p.m.)

TV: CNBC (series), NBC (final) and streaming

Brighton Zeuner, just 17, is among America’s hopes for the Olympic debut of park skateboarding.

Women’s volleyball

What: United States vs. Dominican Republic

When: Wednesday, 12:01 am

Television: NBC and streaming

The United States women begin their knockout stage against the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals. Star Jordan Thompson’s injury status is a big question mark for the future.

Men’s water polo shirt

What: US vs. Spain

When: Wednesday, 1 a.m.

TV: CNBC (delayed, Wednesday, 2 a.m.) and streaming

It’s the quarter-finals, and it will be tough for the United States. Spain went unbeaten in the group game and allowed 31 goals, the lowest in the tournament.
