If a game from the past had even a modicum of success, odds are if it hasn’t been remastered already, there are plans in the pipeline for that to happen at some point. The Last of Us is only nine years old and has already been remastered and remained. However, The Simpsons: Hit & Run, a game that would likely draw big numbers if ever remastered, remains in the black. Those who want to see it are counting on talented fans like the reubs who recently created the game’s nearly 20-year-old open world.
Most Simpsons games from this era were inspired by other popular titles at the time. Hit & Run was no different and was clearly a playful homage to Grand Theft Auto. However, Hit & Run was not an open world. It consisted of three cards. The game has come a long way since its launch, allowing reubs to collect these cards and make the iconic game a fully open world.
You can see the start of the modder’s journey in the video below, and they’re progressing pretty quickly. Even faster than they expected after using a pre-made Hit & Run open world mod to get them started. Once the game’s individual cards have been put together, the reubs make Hit & Run feel less like 2003 and more like 2022.
Reubs tweaks the water, makes sure the panels don’t spin in unison, and adds a whole bunch of trees to the game. If Pokemon Legends: Arceus has taught the industry anything, it’s that players won’t settle for a game with too few trees. Reubs is also turning Springfield into a large island, which they say isn’t faithful to the original game, but it just makes a potential remaster easier.
As for why reubs is doing this, the modder quickly upscaled the game’s first mission in a week last year and the video detailing their creation got four million views in two weeks. The main designer of the Hit & Run Original even commented on it. As for whether the game will be officially remastered, it seems unlikely. It is despite the massive call for him to get a remake or a suite. A poll last year found that it’s the game that has yet to be remastered that gamers would most like to see get the remastered treatment.
