Army West Point defeats Bucknell in Game 1 of the Patriot League Baseball Championship Series (5.24.22)

WEST POINT, NY – Army No. 1 West Point scored three runs late in the ninth inning to secure an 8-7 comeback win over No. 2 Bucknell in Game 1 of the Patriot’s top two baseball championship series. League at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field on Tuesday.

Black Knights senior receiver Cam Cerruto’s sacrificial fly late in the ninth inning led to senior left fielder Nick Manesis earning the victory. Manesis and junior first baseman Ross Friedrick each tackled runs with RBI singles in the final frame to help Army West Point win Game 1.

WEST POINT, NY –Cerruto’s sacrificial fly late in the ninth inning gave top-seeded Army West Point an 8-7 win over No. 2 Bucknell in Game 1 of the Patriot League Baseball Championship Series.
*The Black Knights erased a two-run deficit in the final period with RBI singles from Manesis, who then scored the winning run, and junior first baseman Ross Friedrick.
* Manesis went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI, while Friedrick went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Black Knights.
* West Point Army second LHP Sean Dennehy picked up the victory in relief, striking out a batter in the top of the ninth inning.
* Bucknell senior receiver Logan Kellerman went 2-for-2 with three RBIs to lead the Bison offense.
* The Bison hit first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, as junior designated hitter Mason Kelly threw a run with a bunt single before Kellerman’s sacrificial bunt tackled the game’s second run.
* In the top of the fourth inning, Kellerman extended the lead with an RBI single, and senior second baseman Brendan Lowery scored from third base on a pitching error to take a 4-0 lead.
*The Black Knights responded in the bottom of the inning, getting nine batters home and scoring four runs, highlighted by a two-run single from second baseman Derek Berg.
* Bucknell regained the lead in the fifth inning on second baseman Jacob Corson’s RBI single. Kellerman threw a run on a single in the sixth inning to make the Bison lead 6-4.
* West Point Army’s third baseman Sam Ruta’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth brought the Black Knights within a single run, but the Bison took advantage of an Army error when junior pinch runner Jacob Terwilliger scored on wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning.
* The Black Knights’ first four batters in the bottom of the ninth inning reached base, including back-to-back singles by Ruta, Manesis and Friedrick before Cerruto’s game-winning sacrifice fly.
* Bucknell freshman RHP Tyler O’Neill was charged in the loss, allowing four runs, three of which were earned, in 3.1 innings.
