The athletics community is mourning one of its most treasured talents with the passing on Wednesday of school Alexandra, 14, and former Elliot Belgrave Primary athlete Jamarion Mapp after a brief illness.

Mapp’s form, fearless run, and bespectacled look have captured the attention of many athletic enthusiasts over the years.

He made a big splash in the Obadele Thompson area of the 2018 National Primary School Athletics Championships (NAPSAC), winning the Under-13 Boys’ 400m in a record time of 1: 06.27 minutes.

The following year, he broke three records in the 800m, 400m and 200m as he led his elementary school to the men’s title in the Obadele Thompson zone. He also joined his teammates in breaking the boys’ 800m medley record, as well as the coveted 4x100m record in 56.25 seconds. (NM)
