Cal Poly wins a dozen first-place finishes at the UCSB Invitational

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Cal Poly track and field athletes earned a dozen first-place finishes, highlighted by a school record in the women’s hammer throw, at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational, which ended a three-day race Friday at Pauley Track.

Emilie Hallette ranked first in the hammer with a personal best and school best of 195 feet, 10.25 inches, bettering her previous record and school mark of 193-0 set at the 2021 Big West Conference Championships.

Personal bests were also recorded by the winners of the event Isabelle Rigby in the disc (159-1.25), Melody Nwagwu in the triple jump (39-7.5) and Carissa Buchholz in the 5000 (17:04.28).

Other first places in the women’s events were obtained by Misty Diaz in the 1500 (4:30.19) and Cassidy Hubert in the 800s (2:11.85).

The personal best times or marks were obtained by Anna Grexton hammer (fifth, 153-8.25) and Amaya Lopez Fuller in the shot put (third, 41/4.25),

Shelby Daniele finished second in the 100m with a season best time of 12.02 seconds.

In men’s events, the first Mustangs to achieve personal bests or marks include Devon Cetti with a score of 197-0.5 in the hammer, Mathis Bresko with a height of 17-0.5 in the pole vault, leading a 1-2-3-4 Mustang sweep, Aidan McCarthy with a time of 3:48.43 in the 1500m, Jonathan Chagnon in the 400m hurdles (53.67) and Shively from Xian in the 5000 (13:58.22).

Shively’s time is sixth on Cal Poly’s all-time list for the 5,000.

Other personal best times or scores in men’s events include Corbin Payne (third in hammer, 176-0.75), Elliot Payne (third in javelin, 184-8.5), Anthony Guerra (second in the steeplechase, 9:19.13), Chris Davis (second of the 400, 48.97), Joey Souto (second in the 400 hurdles, 55.00) and Spencer Thurman (third, 14:13.59) and John Bennett (fourth, 14:15.08) in the 5000.

In other men’s events, Brandon Dick was seventh in the discus (160-4), Payne (52-2.5) and Cetti (51-8.75) were third and fourth in the shot put, Payne was third in the hammer 176-0.75), John Walter was second in the vault in height (6-4.75) and Logan Moon finished second in the 800m (1:53.61).

The men’s team placed second in the 4 by 100 relay and third in the 4 by 400 relay while the women finished second in the short and long relays.

Cal Poly will host the Cal Poly Invitational on March 25-26.
