Central Florida man arrested after fleeing fatal crash that killed elderly lady – WFTV

TAVARES, Fla. — A Tavares man is in jail Saturday, charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.

The fatal crash happened at the intersection of Dead River Road and Oak Drive at 1:51 p.m. Friday.

When officers arrived at the scene of the crash, witnesses told them the driver of the offending vehicle got out of his car and fled the accident.

The victim, Melissa Kroeger, had to be extracted from her vehicle by Tavares firefighters.

The 75-year-old Tavares resident was taken to hospital, where she later died of her injuries.

The driver who caused the accident and fled the scene was later identified as Brenten Salerno, 26, from Tavares.

Salerno was located and arrested.

According to police, Salerno admitted to officers that he was the driver of the vehicle.

He is being held in Lake County Jail on $2,000 bond.
