Cowboys roster shift: Dallas signs running back Corey Clement in active roster

The Dallas Cowboys have been busy since “finalizing” their 53-man roster on Tuesday.

To catch up with you since things became somewhat final for the Cowboys, they added another quarterback claiming Will Grier on waivers (punter Bryan Anger was temporarily released to make room for him), they finalized a 14-man first training team (which includes Isaac Alarcón as an exemption as he is part of the International Pathways program), and at the end of Wednesday afternoon the team made a return to the active roster .

Corey Clement will join the Cowboys backfield behind Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Dallas is Clement’s third NFC East team as he played for the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants.

It looks like the Cowboys are planning to use the fifth-year rider on special teams as well, which is normal for an RB3, something the Cowboys didn’t have on their initial roster. Ultimately, this is a pretty normal decision for them as they build their list to the point they want.

At the time of publication, it is unclear who the Cowboys will release to make room for Clement on the active roster, however consider that they have seven candidate players in the injured reserve and also have five. players on the Reserve / COVID-19 list.

Candidates to join the reserve of the wounded:

  • DT Neville Gallimore
  • BY Chauncey Golston
  • CB Kelvin Joseph
  • LB Francois Bernard
  • OT Josh Ball
  • TE Sean McKeon
  • WR Malik Turner

Cowboys players currently on the Reserve / COVID-19 roster (not counted in roster):

  • DT Carlos Watkins
  • S Damontae Kazee
  • G Connor Williams
  • WR CeeDee Lamb
  • WR Noah Brown

Assign for these five, count Clement, then take into account both Bryan Anger and long snapper Jake McQuaide (whom the Cowboys released on Tuesday in a similar proceeding), the team must create eight spots on the roster. Even though the seven we’ve listed are all heading to the casualty reserve, that means a move has to come from somewhere to get to 53.

Plus, the Cowboys technically still have three spots open on their practice squad. If there is someone he wants to promote in the active roster (like tight end Jeremy Sprinkle) then another position will need to be created. Needless to say, the next few days will have some maneuvering.

Speaking of the practice squad, we’ve broken down the 14-man squad the squad announced in the latest video on the Blogging The Boys YouTube channel on Wednesday. Make sure to subscribe to our channel (that you can do here) to not miss any of our videos!
