Edgar Wright Directs Zendaya in Squarespace Super Bowl Ad

Zendaya is already causing a sensation in Hollywood. But a recent Super Bowl commercial, which was shared on Twitter by DiscussingFilm, shows her as a seaside seashell sensation for sure.

Although not booked for the Super Bowl, this Super Bowl ad featuring Zendaya will appear during the broadcast. The spot was directed by Edgar Wright, who also directed Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim Against the World, and the next movie, running man, which is based on the novel by Stephen King.

In the ad, Zendaya plays the titular Sally of the classic rhyming, tongue twister, “Sally She Sells Seashells.” The ad begins with Zendaya-as-Sally sitting by the sea with said seashells.

“Sally sold seashells by the sea,” begins the narrator, later revealed to be Andre Benjamin. “But his shells weren’t selling so well.”

“Shit,” Sally said.

“So Sally started a shell store on Squarespace and soon her shells started selling. Suddenly, Sally was a seashell sensation. So, she also sold chic seashell accessories, shiny sequined shell skirts and sarongs.

“The seashell serenity sessions begin abruptly at sunrise,” the narrator continues, as Zendaya finishes modeling the seashell outfits and begins her “serenity” session.

Zendaya then holds up a tray of seashells. “Exceptionally tasty seaside snacks,” intones the narrator.

A seagull rushes to grab a bite, forcing Sally to give us her second line, “Seriously?”

“Even shore excursions by the sea,” says the narrator. “To sum up, Sally’s Seashells were so successful that she sailed off into the sunset as a seashell celebrity.”

“Shit,” Sally said, once more.

The announcement ends with a play on Squarespace’s motto, “Anything to sell anything”, reorganized here as “Anything to dissect anything”.

Squarespace knew what they were doing when they hired Zendaya and Edgar Wright. The two seem to work well together and have proven to be quite an entertaining place.
