FLORIDA-A Florida man faces animal cruelty charges after an investigation uncovered evidence of dog fighting and cockfighting at his residence, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

Rafael Jesus Del-Valle-Jomarron, 40, of Golden Gate, visited the Naples prison on Friday afternoon after being charged with four counts of animal cruelty – causing death, pain or suffering cruel suffering; one count of animal fighting act – bait, breeding, possession of an animal; and one count of the animal fighting act – selling, owning, using fighting or bait gear, the sheriff’s office said.

“These innocent animals have suffered repeated torture, suffering and pain,” Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said. “We are delighted that we, along with our partners at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Collier County Domestic Animal Services, have brought them to a safe and healing environment and their abuser brought to justice.”

The sheriff’s office began investigating on June 9 when MPs found several injured dogs in wire cages at the Del-Valle-Jomarron residence.

Several injured roosters were also found.

On site was an above ground pool filled with sawdust and what sheriff officials describe as a baiting device often found in animal fighting rings.

Six female bull terriers, one female hunting dog, two seriously injured male bull terriers and one rooster were seized from the property. Three of the bitches were pregnant, including one with a deep laceration to her chest, sheriff officials said.

Detectives also said they found vials of suspected anabolic steroids and animal performance-enhancing supplements.

Animal tracking forensic examinations have found evidence consistent with organized dog fighting, MPs said. One of the dogs had 249 scars and wounds.

Animals remain in the care of Collier County Domestic Animal Services.
