A group of young athletes from Virginia took their talents to Texas to compete in this year’s Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics.

The 11 athletes, ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 12, are part of the first traveling track and field team in Northern Virginia to compete in the competition, which runs through August 7.

They are members of the House of Speed team, which is part of the Springfield / South County Youth Club running programs.

Athletes were required to place in the region’s top 16 and then compete against Virginia’s top athletes for one of the top six spots to make the team.

“It’s for families who are ready to make a commitment, but also for kids who want to be there,” said Tanya House, team head coach and former athlete.

House and her husband also train their sons and see the team as a beacon for Lorton.

“We have kids competing in the national javelin and long jump championships,” she added.

From there, athletes are considered for the Olympics.

House says team members have broken personal bests, including an 11-year-old who placed 11th in the country among 3,000-meter runners, a major achievement that House is proud to see unfold.

“They are up to the occasion,” she added.

The races will continue throughout the week.
