Indian 400m runner Poovamma leaves national camp with injury: Sources | More sports news

NEW DELHI: India’s top 400m runner, MR Poovamma, left Patiala National Camp with an injury, a source said on Sunday evening.
“Due to an injury, Poovamma did not participate in the last selection trials held today [Sunday] here in Patiala to select two female athletes for the Indian 4x400m mixed relay team, ”the source told IANS.
The development could spell a big setback for the Indian Athletics Federation (AFI) to field a strong 4x400m mixed relay team at the Tokyo Olympics, starting July 23.
Despite good medical facilities at the National Sports Institute, Poovamma chose to return to his home country, Karnataka, for treatment.
The seasoned athlete has been a regular 400m runner since the start of the season. She finished second with a time of 53.54 seconds at the Interstate National Track and Field Championships held last month in Patiala.
AFI President Adille Sumariwalla was not available for comment. The mixed team had qualified for the Olympics at the 2019 Doha World Championships as a finalist.
The men’s 4x400m relay team qualified for the Olympics while the women’s 4x400m relay team failed to qualify before the June 29 deadline set by World Athletics to meet qualifying standards .
