Jimmy Zhen named Rookie of the Week
TROY, NY – The Liberty League Weekly Awards have been announced and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Jimmy zhen was chosen as rookie of the week in men’s swimming and diving.
In a triple meeting against the College of Saint Rose and Oneonta, Zhen (West Windsor, NJ / West Windsor-Plainsboro North) had four victories, including two in individual and two in relay.
He started the competition swimming ahead of the winning team in the 400 medley relay who won in 3: 35.48, 14 seconds ahead of the finalist team (3: 49.92). He went on to win the 100 freestyle in 48.76 (second was 49.53) and his third event was the 100 butterfly, which he won in 54.18 (second was 55.24). Zhen, a computer science major, closed the competition by swimming second to the 200 freestyle relay team, who won in 1: 29.35, a time that was four seconds ahead of the second best team (1:33, 55).
Rensselaer defeated the Division II Golden Knights 174-66 and the Red Dragons 175-109 to go 2-2 head-to-head.
Prior to joining the Engineers, Zhen swam for three years with his high school varsity team, breaking program records in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay. Captain, he won the coaches award once and helped the team win a sectional championship.
RPI, who are coached by Shannon O’Brien, are back in action on Saturday when they host Vassar College in a double meet at Robison Pool (1pm).
