Liberty County High School junior Leia Williams was second in the state on discus at the Wingfoot Night of Champions in Marietta on May 22, 2021.

Achievements: Williams won the shot put (39-6.75) at the GHSA State Class 3A competition; second in discus (139-2) at the State meeting. Recorded second best distance on disc (149-6.5, sectional May 8) in Georgia and best at Coastal Empire; also fifth best distance in Georgia (141-9, at Wingfoot Night of Champions on May 22); 18th best distance in shot put (39-6.75) in Georgia.

And after: Nicknamed “Sunshine” for her cheerful presence and smile, Williams is an excellent student (4.0 GPA) who will be returning for her senior season to Liberty County for a college scholarship. Its list of potential colleges includes the University of Florida, the State of Florida, Miami, the State of Kennesaw, and Georgia.

Liberty County junior Leia Williams was second in discus (149 feet, 6.5 inches) in the GHSA Class 3A State meet on May 15 at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

Coach Keith McGee: “I’ve been training her in the weight room since day one of her first year.… She’s passionate about weightlifting.

Williams: After winning a state title in first year discus in 2019, “I was really motivated. I really wanted to win four years of state (championships) for discus. With the conditions and the pandemic and all that, I couldn’t do it. it. I have obtained at least two “state titles” (with one year remaining).
