Man charged after fatal pedestrian accident
ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – Rachanda Myers was killed 13 months ago while sitting a median of the Pan American Highway when a car hit her. Her mother has since fought for someone to pay for the crime. On Monday, Juan Jose Murillo was charged with his death. On September 15, 2020, Murillo was exiting the freeway when he told authorities his brakes stuck, causing his car to slip, hitting Rachanda Myers and killing her. A little over a year later, he faces a charge of vehicle homicide.
“It’s been a year and I’m just happy that something is finally happening so that at least he’s in trouble for something.” She doesn’t deserve to die like this and he gets away with it. I’m happy that something is finally happening, âsaid Joshua Myers, Rachanda Myers’ brother.
The Myers family say they are satisfied with the charges against him and forgive Murillo. Myers’ mother Carol Myers knew her daughter was struggling with drugs at the time of her death. Murillo had told authorities that a vehicle suddenly stopped in front of him and that is why he locked his brakes, but he was charged with manslaughter for reckless driving. They haven’t said yet if it was because he was traveling too fast. Myers’ family say it’s always difficult to come to terms with their loss.
“For me, she’s just going to walk through the door any minute and say ‘just kidding’, but I know she isn’t, but yeah, it’s hard, it’s not getting more easy as the days go by like everyone tells you it gets harder and harder because the more the days go by the more I want to talk to her and the more I miss her, âsaid Carol Myers.
Myers’ mother hopes to finally bring this chapter to a close once Murillo’s case is brought to trial. Rachanda left three boys behind.
