Man seriously injured in shooting in south Ottawa

A man was rushed to hospital in critical condition on Tuesday afternoon following a shooting on Banff Avenue in south Ottawa, according to first responders.

The shooting happened around 12:40 p.m. in the middle of an Ottawa community housing complex, near a park and a community center. The victim was taken to the trauma unit at the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital, paramedics said.

Police cars and warning tape surrounded the scene, not far from Ledbury Avenue. A driveway connecting two blocks of townhouses was also cordoned off. A pool of blood was visible on a path between the two buildings.

The Banff Avenue Community House, which provides essential services as well as programs for children and youth as part of the Ottawa Community Housing Project, is located just across the street.

Several people in the neighborhood told CBC that they heard multiple gunshots.

Charles Pereira, who lives nearby, said he had just hung up when he heard “a few shots”. He saw police cars pull up and got out to see what was going on.

“I noticed there was a gentleman lying on the sidewalk over there like he was bleeding, and [first responders] were trying to… resuscitate him, he said.

“It’s not the first time this has happened. They bring them here from time to time, the shootings,” Pereira said, although he added that it was the first time he had witnessed the aftermath. of a daytime shooting.

Com. Riley Brockington, who represents the area, said on social media on Tuesday that he was “very saddened” to learn of the shooting.

Police are asking residents to avoid the area while their investigation continues.

It is not known whether any arrests have been made.
