New South Wales destroyed Queensland 44-12 in Perth thanks to a masterclass from Nathan Cleary and the series now heads to a decider in Brisbane on July 13.

The Blues complained about the Maroons slowing down the ruck in Game 1 and referee Ashley Klein clearly took the comments on board.

Klein controversially dismissed Maroons enforcer Felise Kaufusi in the 38th minute for slowing the ruck down his own goal line.

To’o capitalizes after Kaufusi BINNED! | 01:07

NSW immediately scored through Brian To’o and while Queensland were brave not to concede again with Kaufusi off the pitch, the period wore them down.

“I’m disappointed with the sin bin, let’s hope he doesn’t decide the game. I hate sin bins at the best of times, let alone in Origin, Phil Gould said at halftime.

The Maroons failed to score another point after the sin bin as Cleary went wild, finishing with 24 points to his name.

Klein barely whistled in the first 60 minutes of Game 1, but he gave Perth nine penalties in the same period.

The win came after Blues coach Brad Fittler made five changes to his starting squad in a desperate bid to keep the streak alive.

It proved a masterstroke as they produced an eerily similar result to Game II in Perth in 2019 when Fittler also made a host of changes after losing the first game. NSW won the series.

Cleary’s performance was a resounding response from the opener when he came under heavy criticism after being outplayed by Cameron Munster.

“I knew I could be better, we knew as a group we could be better. I just want to play my best for my family and my state, we are very lucky to wear this shirt and now we have one more, Cleary said on Channel 9.

The Blues scored the game’s first points when they were awarded consecutive penalties, which led to Cleary being offered two points in the 11th minute.

The Maroons started fiercely and scored the first try thanks to a fine pass from Kalyn Ponga which left the blue backs furious.

Cobbo Bombs fired on the first try in Match 2! | 00:34

Kaufusi scored the first try in the 22nd minute, but the Blues fought back moments later through debutant Matt Burton.

Queensland regained the lead on the half-hour mark with another pass from Ponga which led to a try from Cameron Munster.

But Kaufusi was knocked out at halftime and To’o scored in the next set.

Blues winger Daniel Tupou got past the first down on the second before Jarome Hughes and Cleary blew up the game with an eight-minute blitz.

Luai danced 20 yards out before Cleary scored two tries in two minutes to freeze the game after 66 minutes.

Angus Crichton got a recall for the game and scored the last try of the night in the 73rd minute.

“They came with new energy tonight. It’s been all Blues,” Cameron Smith said.
