Matheny was named National Athlete of the Week by the USTFCCCCA

NEW ORLEANS – During the final week of the season before the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its weekly winners and Meghan Matheny of Ithaca College’s women’s team was chosen as the National Athlete of the Week on Court.

Matheny, who competed in the AARTFC Championships last weekend at Nazareth College, became the first and only Division III pole vaulter to clear 4.00 meters this season. Matheny’s mark of 4.00 (13′ 1.5″) set a new personal best and was an installation record at the Golisano training facility.

Already the season’s top performer in the pole vault, Matheny added six centimeters to her previous best clearance to claim the event’s title at the AARTFC Indoor Athletics Championships last weekend. After needing two attempts to clear both 3.77m (12′ 4.5″) and 3.82m (12′ 6.25″), Matheny cleared 3.87m (12′ 8, 25″) on his first attempt and 4.00 m on his second.

Matheny now has five of the top 6 bars on the seasonal chart and enters the NCAA DIII Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend on a surge of momentum.

This is the second time this season that a female athlete from Ithaca has been named National Athlete of the Week. Tia Jones had already earned this honor two weeks ago, on February 22.

Matheny will compete for a chance to win his second national title at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
