Men’s football opens WAC Play with victory over Chicago State
CHICAGO, Illinois. – University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s soccer team Vaqueros opened the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) game with a 2-0 victory over the Chicago State Cougars on Saturday at SeatGeek Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Vaqueros (4-3, 1-0-0 WAC) took the lead of the 70e minute as a junior Reshaun walks connected with junior Moïade Ankir who cut towards goal as he tapped it for the 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros added another goal in the 88e minute as a turnaround saw Walkes slip past the left side of the field and sneak past Cougar goaltender Joe Bowles for his seventh goal of the season.
The Vaqueros outscored the Cougars (2-5-1, 0-1-0 WAC) 13 to four and eight to one on goal.
Senior Olivier Padilla made a shutout save on his first start of the season.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on October 1 when they face Utah Valley University in their home opener at 1 p.m. at the UTRGV soccer and track complex. Those unable to attend the game can watch in the US on ESPN + or internationally on the WAC digital network.
