New York Giants Needs Analysis: Running Backs

If I had told you a few years ago that a group of Giants running backs headlined by Saquon Barkley would be at a crossroads today, would you have believed me?

Yes, me neither. Yet here we are. According to Sports Information Solutions, the Giants running back group – Barkley, Matt Breida, Antonio Williams, Gary Brightwell and Sandro Platzgummer –are one of five job groups languishing at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to strengths and weaknesses.

The reason is probably twofold. First, Barkley has been crippled by injuries and the same coaching carousel that contributed to quarterback Daniel Jones’ failure.

Second, Barkley and Breida, the Giants’ slated punch, aren’t signed beyond this year, putting the team at a crossroads after this season.

Unless Barkley steps up and/or is willing to accept a modest contract, the chances of him returning are not promising. Breida, meanwhile, one of several players with a unique connection to the Bills, is signed to a one-year contract, while Williams, who also has a previous connection to the Bills, is signed to a contract of two years.

So could the Giants be looking to draft a running back? They would have done a lot of work on the group, even devoting at least three of their top 30 visits with running backs (Brian Robinson of Alabama, Breece Hall of Iowa State and James Cook of Georgia). Still, it would be surprising if they dipped into the running back class until Day 3.

Here are five running back scouting reports from Inside soccer should be day 3 picks.
