Odom Chooses To Join NM State Staff As Defensive Back Coach

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – NM State has its defensive secondary leader.

NM State Head Coach Jerry kill announced the addition of Cliff Odom to its staff for the next season 2022 and beyond. Odom will coach NM State’s defensive backs.

Prior to joining the Kill staff at NM State, Odom five other programs benefited from his services. Most recently, Eastern Illinois employed the former Baylor player for two seasons (2020 and 2021). At the FCS institution, Odom oversaw the Panthers’ defensive back group and produced a trio of All-Ohio Valley Conference winners during his two seasons in Charleston, Ill.

Odom headed to northern Illinois after a two-year stint as a special teams quality control coach at UCF from 2018-19. The Knights had an impressive 22-4 during Odom’s tenure and appeared in a couple of bowl games. One of Odom’s students took home the All-AAC Second Team honors as a Special Teams performer.

Another Florida post-secondary institution, Stetson, had Odom on staff in 2017. At DeLand University, Fla., Odom was the team’s defensive back coach and oversaw the development of the defensive newcomer to the team. year of the Pioneer League, JJ Henderson.

Odom was a graduate assistant at two Power Five clubs – Missouri (2016) and TCU (2015) – before moving to Florida. With Missouri he worked exclusively with the team’s cornerback squad and with Odom in that team room the Tigers topped the SEC standings in interceptions. At TCU, the Horned Frogs posted an 11-2 record and won the Alamo Bowl.

In the three seasons leading up to his college career, Odom coached at Martin High School in Arlington, TX. There he was the team’s secondary coach while coordinating all strength and conditioning operations. The Martin High School athletic team also benefited from Odom’s coaching services.

The Odom family’s football lineage runs deep as Cliff’s father, Cliff Odom Sr., racked up 13 years of NFL service for the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins from 1980 to 1993. Odom’s brother Chris is a defensive end by trade and has also appeared on a trio 2017-19 NFL roster (Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers, Washington Redskins) before signing with the CFL Calgary Stampeders in February 2021.

Odom received his BA from Baylor in 2011 following a career as a college footballer in which he was heavily involved in both SAAC and FCA.
