Preview: Gophers set to host Rocky’s Run

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota’s No. 5/23 cross country team will wrap up their regular season schedule this Sunday, November 7, when they host Rocky’s Run, a 6 mile open race, at 10:30 a.m. CT in The Bolstad route.

The public is invited to join the Gophers for a 6 km open race at the Bolstad this weekend. Registration is now open online and will close at 9:00 p.m. CST on Saturday, November 6. Race day registration will also be available on Sunday. The registration fee to participate is $ 20 per person.

Rocky’s Run was founded in 1981 to honor former runner Gopher Rochelle “Rocky” Racette, who died in a car crash at the age of 22. While at the University of Minnesota, Racette was an American athletics and cross country. country and 5000-meter champion Big Ten and Drake Relays. The annual race is hosted by the many members of the running community who have known and loved it. Racette’s legacy lives on through the memory of those who knew her, and through Rocky’s Run and the scholarship for which it raises funds.

At the 2021 Big Ten Conference Cross Country Championships last weekend, Minnesota arguably put on their best performances of the season on both sides of the schedule.

Led by the 2021 Big Ten individual champion, Megan Hasz, the Gopher Women managed to win their third Big Ten tag team title in program history. Three women finished in the top 10 in the 6 km race, with Mr. Hasz (first), Abby Kohut Jackson (seventh) and Bethany Hasz (ninth) earning all All-Big Ten honors. M. Hasz is the third individual champion in the history of the program, joining her sister B. Hasz and Eileen Donaghy, who won in 2020 and 1987 respectively.

The men were led by an All-Big Ten First Team performance of Alec basten, who placed fifth in the men’s 5.2 mile race to help Minnesota place third (83 points) in the team standings. The five Gophers who scored placed in the top 25, with Matt Wilkinson claim the 15th while Owen Hoef, Khalid Hussein and Jack Manderscheid took 20th-22nd, respectively.

Minnesota will begin its NCAA playoff schedule on Friday, November 12 at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Iowa City, Iowa.
