Redbirds punctuated by Hickey and Klouda in Joe Piane Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Junior Rachel Hickey and second Tyler klouda were the Redbirds’ top players in their respective races Friday afternoon at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Indiana.

In the women’s gold division race, Hickey finished 28e overall in his first 5 km race of the season, with a time of 18: 08.0.

Second year Ashley heagy was the next Redbird to cross the finish line, as she set a personal best time of 18: 28.5, almost 40 seconds faster than her previous record. Hickey and Heagy, both from Peru, Illinois who attended the same high school, finished 1-2 overall for the Redbirds.

In her first season as a transfer student, Caroline Meyers also set a personal best for the race with her time of 18: 45.0, a minute faster than her previous best time she set at UMKC.

Freshman Matti Plummer was fourth for the Birds, clocking 18: 47.7. In the final 1,000 meters of the race, Plummer stepped up a gear, overtaking 33 runners to finish 77e globally.

To complete the score for women, second year Ailey mitchell finished in 18: 51.9, while the Redbird finished in 14e in total on 24 teams.

In his first cross-country race of the season, Klouda clocked 25: 31.3 to finish 37e overall in the men’s 8K gold division race.

First-year student Charlie wetzel was the ISU’s second scorer, scoring shortly after Klouda in 25: 54.0.

Originally from Ellesmere Port, England, Joseph Morrison finished in a time of 26: 10.0, as Lucas Capistrant and Jake gillum completed the Redbirds score. ISU men finished 11e in total over 21 teams in the gold division race.


The Redbirds are scheduled to travel to Peoria, Ill. For the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday, October 15. Following the meeting in Peoria, the ISU will make one final regular season trip to Champaign for the Illini Invite before returning home to host the 2021 MVC. Championships on Friday October 29th.
