Rowing’s Raggi Named Finalist for CRCA Athlete of the Year

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Rowing’s Fran Raggi has been named a finalist for the inaugural Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I Athlete of the Year, the organization announced Friday.

“Fran Raggi is an exceptional athlete and a wonderful person,” said the Texas head coach. Dave O’Neill. “It’s impossible for our team to have the success they have without her. He’s someone who brings out the best in his teammates and draws strength from them as well. It’s never been more important than this spring, and I’m forever grateful for the time we have together.”

A three-time All-American, the 2022 Big 12 Rower of the Year helped guide the Longhorns to a second straight NCAA National Championship and was a member of the Texas First Varsity Eight that won the national title for the second straight year.

Raggi, a native of Maitland, Fla., rowed mostly sevens in the 1V8 this season, helping the boat to an undefeated season in which UT won all eleven races and went 37-0 in the lead- headed. competitions.

Texas’ I Eight recorded victories over 24 ranked opponents with Raggi on board, including a dominating win in the NCAA Championship Grand Finals, in which Texas took a two-spot lead at the 250-yard mark and s pressed on the advantage throughout the remainder of the race, winning in open water with a time of 6:10.733, 4.7 seconds ahead of runner-up Stanford.

This summer, she represented the United States at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships, helping the Texas women’s four-man team (BW4-) to a world championship. It was the second year in a row in which Raggi won gold at the World Regatta after winning the World Championship with the Women’s Eight (BW8+) in 2021.
