Six Bears named to IRCA All-America team

Six members of the men’s rowing team earned All-American honors as announced by the IRCA.

Four named in the first team; Two named in the second team

BERKELEY — Six members of the California men’s national rowing team have been named to the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association (IRCA) All-America team.

Earning first-team honors was Angus Dawson, Ollie Maclean, Gennaro de Mauro, and Luca Viera. Whereas Iwan Hadfield and Tim Roth were named to the second team.

Viera served as coxswain for the Bears’ varsity eight that won the IRA Championship by nearly two seconds over runner-up Yale. Dawson, Maclean, di Mauro, Hadfield and Roth were also members of the V8+ who went undefeated this spring, also winning the Pac-12 Championship.

Earlier this week, Cal had 12 members named IRCA Scholar-Athletes. Gaining academic recognition has been Tommy BarrelFrederick Breuer, Harry CoxGrant Fisher, Bret Holt, Elliott Kemp, Evan LaneMaclean, Ryan Prendergast, Fred Roper, Christoph Seifriedsbergerand Viera.

To receive IRCA Scholar Athlete honors, a student-athlete must have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.50, be at least in the second year of eligibility, and have competed in the top three boats on a team or competed in the Championship National IRA 2021.

The Bears currently have four boats competing in the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in the UK.
