The card competes at Berkeley – Stanford University Athletics

BERKELEY, Calif. – Just like during the Stanford Invitational last week, Garrett Brown and Laurel Wong gave Stanford a pole vault sweep, this time at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Edwards Stadium on Saturday.

Brown, a freshman and reigning Pac-12 male field athlete of the week, won the men’s event at 17-1 (5.21 meters) and Wong won the women’s event at 12-9 ½ (3.90m). Each won despite sharing the winning heights.

They were among 12 Stanford athletes to take part in the meet, along with Megan Olomo winning two lifetime records, in the women’s 100m and 200m.

The women’s pole vault had six competitors on 12-3 ½ (3.75m), including Stanford’s Kelly Kern with his college best. At that time, Stanford Lianne Kistler and UC Davis’ Marin Chamberlin shared the clear lead.

However, Wong and former University of Houston outfielder Sage Hintnaus-Gaudian cleared to 12-9 ½ on their first downs. Kistler and Chamberlin needed three. On the countdown, the result was determined by previous jumps at 11-9 ¾ (3.60 m). Wong cleared it on his first down and Hintnaus-Guadian on his second.

In the men’s pole vault, Cal’s Brown and Tyler Burns both went 17-1. Brown hit his second down, while Burns cleared his third. The extra jump cost Burns. Brown was perfect at his first three peaks. Brown took three tries at a record 17-5 ¾ (5.33m), but was unsuccessful.

Olomu continues to improve with each encounter. A week after setting a record 25.01 in the 200m, Olomu reduced it to 24.90, while still placing sixth. In the 100m, she lowered her best time from 12.26 to 12.17 in a second-place finish.

The Cardinal will split his team next week between three Southern California meetups — the Mt. SAC Invitational in Walnut, the Beach Invitational in Long Beach and the Bryan Clay Invite in Azusa.
