MUSKEGON — The Orchard View women’s soccer team will compete for a Division 3 District Championship later tonight and one of the key players to watch in their game against Newaygo will be striker Nadalia Mendiola.

The talented Cardinals scorer is coming off a hat trick in the first round of the district tournament that helped her team to a 4-2 win over Montague. She also added a goal earlier this week in a 2-0 win over Oakridge that propelled Orchard View into tonight’s district title game.

Readers of MLive and the Muskegon Chronicle were impressed with Mendiola’s impact on this year’s district tournament and on-court playing abilities as they flooded the polls this week with support from the forward from Orchard View as their top pick for MLive Muskegon Athlete of the Week May 23-28.

Mendiola took top honors in this week’s poll by a wide margin, as she secured over 12,500 votes to fend off Reeths-Puffer’s Sophia Hekkema, who finished second with over 10,000 votes. Avery Flynn of Spring Lake finished third overall with over 2,500 votes, Lilli Goodrich of Ludington finished fourth with over 1,500 votes and Kylie Brown of Kent City rounded out the Top 5 with over 500 total votes.
