A look at what’s going on at Cleveland State Athletics…

men’s basketball

-The Vikings (19-7, 15-4) will finish the regular season on the road this week, traveling to Detroit Mercy on Thursday, Feb. 24 and Oakland on Saturday, Feb. 26.

-Last time out, Cleveland State had a pair of wins at Milwaukee and Green Bay, capturing at least a share of the Horizon League regular season title.

-The Vikings have also locked down the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Horizon League tournament and will begin play by holding a quarter-final contest on Thursday, March 3.

women’s basketball

-Cleveland State (17-6, 12-5) will have a busy time to close out the regular season this week, traveling to Detroit Mercy on Monday, February 21 before hosting Milwaukee (Thursday, February 24) and Green Bay (Saturday, February 24 ). February 26).

-Last time out, the Vikings had back-to-back wins at Oakland and Detroit Mercy, moving to fourth in the #HLWBB standings.

-Destiny Leo paced the Vikings offense with back-to-back 20-point games last week, while Amele Ngwafang posted double-digit rebounds in both games.

swim and dive

-Cleveland State wrapped up a successful weekend at the #HLSD Championships last time out, with the men placing second and the women placing fifth.

– The men won three titles this weekend; Timothy Kubacki (200 IM), Jackson Nester (400 IM) and the 400 IM relay, while Ana Sofia Sousa won the 200 freestyle to lead the women.

-Timothy Kubacki was named Horizon League Male Athlete of the Year.

Racetrack

-Cleveland State will compete in the #HLTF Indoor Championships this weekend, taking part in the two-day event on Saturday, February 26 and Sunday, February 27.

-This weekend’s #HLTF Championships will be the seventh indoor meeting of the season for the Vikings.

-In the first six competitions of the year, the Vikings have recorded 14 top-five finishes, including three event wins from Dynesty Ervin and Margaret Smith.

Struggle

-Cleveland State will take a week off from competition and return to action at the MAC Championships on March 4-5.

-Last time out, the Vikings capped off the regular season with a 22-15 win over George Mason.

-Cleveland State finished the regular season with an 8-9 overall record and a 5-5 record in the MAC.

-Marcus Robinson represented Cleveland State in the NCAA midseason rankings, ranking No. 31 at 149 pounds.

Fencing

-Cleveland State is scheduled to compete in the Central Collegiate Fencing Championships on Sunday, February 27.

-This will mark the Vikings’ sixth event of the season and their first competition since the NU Winter Duals earlier this month.

The Crosse

-Cleveland State will continue the 2022 campaign on the road this weekend, starting a three-game road swing at Michigan on Saturday, February 26.

-Last time out, the Vikings lost an 11-9 decision to Mercer in their home opener.

-Gannon Matthews led the Vikings offense with three goals, while Jason Sullivan had four assists.

Men’s Tennis

-The Vikings will continue their first home stand of the spring campaign with a trio of games this week, hosting Duquesne on Monday, Feb. 21, before hosting Buffalo and Lawrence Tech at MMTP on Saturday, Feb. 26.

-Last time out, Cleveland State dropped a 5-2 decision to Dayton in the 2022 Spring Home Opener.

-As of the start of the week, Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Mikael Erler both have the team’s top three singles wins this spring, while Mareschal-Hay and Kade Mindry have 12 total singles wins this year.

women’s tennis

-Cleveland State will wrap up February at the MMTP this weekend, hosting Buffalo on Friday, February 25 and Bowling Green on Sunday, February 27.

-Last time out, the Vikings lost a pair of hard-fought games against Toledo and Cincinnati.

-Bethany Yauch and Klara Mrcela picked up singles wins over the weekend, with Yauch improving to a team record of 7-3 this spring and 14-7 overall this year in singles.

male golf

-The Vikings will open their spring campaign at Wexford Intercollegiate this week, with two rounds taking place on Monday February 21 and one round taking place on Tuesday February 22.

-Cleveland State will be one of 16 teams competing at Wexford Golf Club in Hilton Head, SC

-The Wexford Intercollegiate will be the first of five events for the Vikings this spring, culminating in the Horizon League Championships in late April.

Soft ball

-Cleveland State (4-5) will continue its early-season tournament slate at the Wings ETC Classic in Spartanburg, SC this weekend, facing USC Upstate, Pittsburgh and Tennessee Tech throughout the three-day tournament ( from Friday February 25 to Sunday February 27).

-This weekend’s Wings ETC Classic will be the third of four early-season tournaments for the Vikings.

-After the first nine games, Melissa Holzopfel leads the Vikings offense with 16 hits, while Courtney Fernette added 10.

-Melissa Holzopfel also picked up two wins in the circle, making seven appearances in the first nine games.

Timothy Kubacki, Men’s Swimming and Diving
Named Horizon League Athlete of the Year after helping the Vikings finish second at the #HLSD Championships. Won the 200 IM at the league meet, while placing second in the 200 backstroke and 400 IM.

Daniel Bucknavich, Wrestling

Sealed Cleveland State’s victory over George Mason with a pin (3:07) in their game at 285 pounds, helping the Vikings earn their fifth MAC victory of the 2022 campaign.

Destiny Leo, Women’s Basketball

Averaged 23.0 points per game in a pair of wins at Oakland and Detroit Mercy, scoring consecutive 20-point games. Shot 50% from the floor, while averaging 3.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Helped the Vikings climb to fourth in the #HLWBB standings.

Tre Gomillion, men’s basketball

Helped the Vikings capture the No. 1 seed in the upcoming #HLMBB tournament with back-to-back 20-point games in Milwaukee and Green Bay. Shot 81% over the weekend, including an .846 clip at Green Bay (11 for 13), finishing with 27 points against the Phoenix, helping Cleveland State capture at least a share of the regular-season title.
