West Jordanian man accused of running over and killing his wife at Salt Lake City airport pleads guilty

Shawn Sturgeon, 38, will be sentenced in September.

(SLCPD) Police investigate at Salt Lake City International Airport on April 4, 2022. The husband accused of running his wife over in the airport parking lot, killing her, pleaded guilty this week to motor vehicle homicide.

A 38-year-old man from western Jordan pleaded guilty to motor vehicle homicide this week, three months after police said he ran over his drunk wife and killed her in a Salt Lake City International Airport parking lot.

Shawn Sturgeon and his wife had just returned from a trip when they and their ‘little child’ were in the airport’s short-term parking garage around 2.30pm on April 4, according to court documents.

Witnesses said the pair argued in the terminal and garage CCTV showed Sturgeon backing up and then running over his wife.

Sturgeon then got out of the vehicle, “waving his arms” and allegedly told his wife to get into the truck, police said. He then led them to the tollbooth exit from the garage, where he asked for help.

His wife was taken to hospital, where she died shortly afterwards.

Police said Sturgeon had “glassy bloodshot eyes” and smelled of alcohol. A preliminary toxicology examination revealed that Sturgeon had a blood alcohol level of 0.13 at the time, nearly three times the legal limit in Utah.

On Monday, Sturgeon pleaded guilty to one second-degree felony count of motor vehicle homicide and one third-degree felony count of domestic violence in the presence of a child.

His sentencing is scheduled for September 9.
