Wetzel and Mitchell lead the state of Illinois in Redbird Invite

NORMAL, Illinois – On an extremely hot Friday night, the sophomores Charlie wetzel and Ailey mitchell ranked in the top 15 to lead the Redbirds to fifth place in the men’s team and fourth in the team for the women at the Redbird Invite at Weibring Golf Club.

Wetzel punctuated the men of Redbird with an 11e finished the men’s 8km race with a personal best 24: 48.40, 16 seconds better than his previous ISU record.

A pair of traditional mid-distance runners were next to cross the finish line for the ‘Birds, as Joseph Morrison and Riley wells finished 23rd and 38e, respectively. Second year Tyler polak finished 42sd total in 25: 42.20. Wells and Polak both achieved personal bests.

First-year student Charlie kistner was the last scorer to cross the finish line for the ISU, finishing 46e in the general classification during his first 8 km race. The men finished fifth overall with a total of 153 points.

In just his first 6km race in an ISU uniform, Mitchell was the first runner to cross the finish line for the ‘Birds, finishing 14e total in 21: 39.80. The Redbird Invite also marked Mitchell’s first run of the 2021 campaign.

UMKC transfer Claire Fuhlhage finished second in ISU women, placing 28e in total in 22: 06.70. Elders Rachel Hickey and Caroline Meyers were the next to score for the ISU, finishing just seconds apart in 33rd and 34e, respectively.

First-year student Lauren Schulze clinched a top 50 in his first 6k race, placing 44e total in 22: 35.90. The ISU women finished fourth overall with 134 points, finishing ahead of rivals MVC Southern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Drake and Valparaiso.


The Redbirds have a weekend off before heading to South Bend Indiana to compete in the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. Action is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. CT on Friday, October 1.
