Women’s soccer drop out of season finale in overtime

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Women’s Football (UTRGV) closed out the 2021 season with a 2-1 overtime loss to the Chicago State University Cougars on Saturday at the Soccer Complex and athletics of the UTRGV.

The match was scoreless until 85e minute when Jayla gage scored on the left to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead (2-14-1, 2-8-0 WAC).

The Vaqueros (6-12-2, 2-7-1 WAC) responded less than two minutes later when junior Shentatious knox sent a pass from the right to the top of the box. The ball appeared to be heading towards the UTRGV’s top scorer and junior points-scorer Emilie Zapata, who let the ball pass. Second year Comi Dade was right next to Zapata and shot a howler in the back of the net to tie the game at 1. It was Dade’s first career goal and his first points as a Vaquero after previously registering an assist with Kentucky in 2019.

In the 98e minute, however, Gage scored the match winner thanks to an assist from Julia oliveira.

The Vaqueros outscored the Cougars 15-7, including 8-3 on goal.

Graduate student Maile Lunardi (4-11-1) made a save.

Alexa seiler (2-12-1) made seven saves.

Before the match Anna barkey, Knox, Monardi, Victoria mayo, McAllen alum Miranda Munoz, Pace alum Kryssie Rivera, Shi’Anne Swift, and Zapata were honored as part of the senior ceremonies.
