What were the biggest movies and TV shows that captivated Singaporeans in 2021? Yahoo’s ranking based on user searches in Singapore shows Asian content remains king here, with viewers obsessed with K-dramas and Asian-inspired Hollywood films.

With Netflix’s Squid Game series (1st) being talked about since its launch in September, it’s no surprise that this sensational drama series topped this list. South Korean shows remain highly regarded with Singaporeans as they topped the list of most searched movies and TV shows with seven of the top eight spots, with the exception of World Wrestling Entertainment which sneaked up to No.2, putting featured the very first Singaporean wrestler on the network, Sean Tan, who scored a victory in his debut match.

Longtime South Korean variety show Running Man came in third, beating trending drama series such as Vincenzo (4th), Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (7th) and Nevertheless (8th). Marvel’s Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings (9th) and Raya and Disney’s Last Dragon (10th) topped the list of the two most popular films this year.

10. Raya and the last dragon

This film is about a young female warrior in a fantasy world who must find the last dragon in existence to save his people from a looming plague. It made waves for being Disney’s first animated film to highlight the cultures of Southeast Asia.

Martial artist Shang-chi is the main character in the upcoming Marvel Studios film, Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

9. Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings

Simu Liu exploded in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a kungfu master Shang-Chi, which was a huge boost for Asian representation in the MCU. As Asians, it’s really cool that the biggest movie franchise in the world is adding more faces to its cast that represent our culture.

8. Nevertheless

Song Kang and Han So-hee displayed intense chemistry in Nevertheless as a pair of college students who fall in love. The drama was a realistic version of the romantic genre and portrayed daring sex scenes, unusual for Korean television, as well as a queer subplot.

7. Hometown of Cha-Cha-Cha

Shin Min-a and Kim Seon-ho star in this drama as an unlikely couple who nevertheless develop a relationship. As well as enjoying the best ratings in South Korea, the show also garnered a lot of attention when Kim found herself embroiled in a abortion scandal. However, the reputation of the rising star recovered after leaked text messages showed that he had not forced his ex-girlfriend to have an abortion.

6. Mouse

In Mouse, Lee Seung-gi and Lee Hee-joon play the role of two police officers who track down a psychopathic serial killer. Fans praised Seung-gi for his lineup of acting as well as the exciting twists and emotional depth of the series.

5. Mr. Queen

This period comedy about body swapping with Choi Jin-hyuk, Shin Hye-sun, and Kim Jung-hyun is about a modern-day leader who finds himself trapped in the body of a Queen of the Joseon Dynasty. The show’s finale, which explored gender ideology and queer coded romance, drew the fifth-highest audience in tvN history.

4. Vincenzo

Star Song Joong-ki is back on TV after a long break with Vincenzo, in which he plays a mafia consigliere. The show sparked a transnational controversy between Koreans and Chinese when an episode featured product placement of an instant bibimbap product made by a Chinese brand. It got so bad that the show had to take a hiatus to do covers and The song apologized personally for the hubbub.

3. The running man

Lee Kwang-soo, who was a cast member of Running Man, has decided to quit the longtime variety show after 11 years. He struggled to cope with his physical demands after injuring his ankle in a car crash in 2020. His latest episode, which aired in June, was an emotion in which he cried while reading his farewell letter to the cast of Running Man.

2. Entertainment of the world wrestling

Why is WWE on this list? Well, Singaporean Sean Tan became the country’s first wrestler to feature in WWE when he debuted on the big wrestling company’s weekly NXT show. The 25-year-old, who uses the stage name Dante Chen, previously wrestled under the name Trexxus for Singapore Pro Wrestling.

1. Squid game

the macabre thriller Squid Game has become a worldwide craze, topped Netflix’s Daily Top 10 Worldwide. The show starring Lee Jung-jae featured a group of broke people forced to play deadly games for the cash prize. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is is already making plans for season 2.
