Zapata becomes women’s football’s all-time leader in victory over Abilene Christian


RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Junior Emilie Zapata became the all-time leader in women’s football history at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) as the Vaqueros beat the Christian University of Abilene Wildcats 2-1 on Thursday at the football and athletics of the UTRGV.

Zapata scored three points on a goal and an assist to bring his career tally to 69, one ahead Sarah Bonney (2016-19), who finished with 68 points.

Bonney’s assist came on a junior goal Anna barkey in the eighth minute. Second year Anna torslov added an assist and sent a ball past Zapata, who passed it past Barkey. Lily foster (6-8-1) came to the top of the box in an attempt to stop the ball, but Barkey won the run and sent the ball into the net.

Zapata then scored what turned out to be the winner of the 19e minute when freshman Nadia colon found Zapata running on the left side of the box. Zapata then used his right foot to send a diagonal shot into the goal.

The Wildcats (6-8-1, 4-4-1 WAC) scored their only goal in 70e minute on a strike of Alyssia Anuat.

The Vaqueros (6-11-2, 2-6-1 WAC) outscored the Wildcats 12-11, including 5-3 on goal.

Graduate student Maile Lunardi (4-10-1) finished with two saves.

The UTRGV will close the season Saturday at 7 p.m. against Chicago State at the UTRGV Soccer and Track Complex. Free entry. Those who cannot attend the game in person can watch in the US on ESPN + or internationally on the WAC digital network.
